FACTS OF INTEREST

  • Pandas live only in the remote wet mountains of central China where bamboo thrives.  They used to live all over China.
  • Based in chromosome tests, pandas have been classified as a subfamily of bears.  They also share characteristics with raccoons.
  • Pandas feed on twenty varieties of bamboo exclusively.  Due to a short digestive tract, they have to eat large quantities sometimes 40 pounds a day.
  • Because they only have one baby every other year and because their habitat continues to be destroyed, pandas are seriously endangered.

THE PANDA’S GRIEF

Once long ago in China, there lived a young shepherdess who was known for her kindness.  Whenever she took her sheep to graze, a young panda would join the flock.  Perhaps it thought the sheep were its own kind becuase in those days pandas were all white.  One day out in the pasture, a leopard attacked the cub while it grazed with the sheep.  The brave shepherdess beat it off with a stick, but before the leopard ran away, it wounded her gravely.  She was carried home unconscious by her family.  When the other pandas heard the sad news, they came to the girl’s home with their arms covered in ashes as a sign of their grief.  They sat outside her window crying, and as they cried, they rubbed their eyes and held their heads in sorrow.  As they cried harder, they comforted each other by patting their arms and legs.  The pandas cried all day, until eventually the girl woke up.  Since the, pandas have kept their distance from sheep and people and leopards.  And since that terrifying day, whereever they touched themselves as they cried, the ashes stained their fur and all pandas now carry these marks.

  • Opossums have prehensile tails.  Babies are light enough to hang from theirs, adults use them mostly for grasping objects.

POSSUM’S TAIL

Possum used to have a beautiful bushy tail that he combed every morning and sang about at every dance.  Coyote was jealous since her tail was scruffy and full of weeds and dirt.  One day, the animals decided to hold a great council meeting.  “We want your tail to look especially good for this dance” Coyote said to Possum, “so I’m sending Cricket the Barber to dress it for you.”  Cricket wrapped a red string around Possum’s tail “to keep your fur smooth”  But as she wound the string, she secretly snipped the hair close to the roots.  When it was Possum’s turn to dance, he loosened the string, stepped to the middle of the circle and began singing.  “See my lovely tail.  See the fine fur.  See how it sweeps the ground.”  The animals laughed so hard that Possum stopped dancing and looked at his tail.  When he saw that it was as bare as the tail of a lizard, he was so ashamed that he slumped to the ground, grinning foolishly, just as he does today when taken by surprise.

HOW BISON WERE RELEASED FROM EARTH

Long ago a very powerful spirit being called Humpback lived with his young son in the mountains.  He kept all of the bison on earth in a corral with high stone walls and would not let any of the people or animals share his bounty of good meat and warm fur.

Coyote did not think this was fair so he summoned a council with the people he had a plan.  Coyote had observed that Humpback’s son had no pet.  He would appear to the son as an injured bird and trick him into taking him home.  When Humpback and his son slept he would become Coyote and release the bison.

Coyote tried this plan but it did not work.  “Get that thing out of my house” Humpback shouted.  “All animals are rascals and schemers.”  Humpback wore a blue mask, and through its slits his eyes glittered.  His basket headdress was shaped like a cloud and was painted black with a zigzag streak like lightening.  Buffalo horns protruded from the sides.

“All is not lost” Coyote told the people.  “It will surely work if I become a sweet furry dog”

Once again the son was fooled and took the little dog home.  “Please can I keep this good dog?”  he pleaded.  Humpback knew all animals were tricksters and to make sure this was really a dog he came at him with coals fromt he fire until he barked three times.  Satisfied, he said “You can keep the dog in the bison corral but not in the house.”

As soon as they went to sleep the dog began barking.  The bison had never heard a dog before so they were terribly frightened.  By the time Humpback woke up, the last bison was thundering through the front door.

“Where is my dog?” the boy cried.

“That was no dog,” Humpback said.  “We have been fooled by Coyote the Trickster.”

Thus it was that the bison were released to scatter all over the Earth.

Cheetah Hand Puppet by Folkmanis

Cheetah Hand Puppet by Folkmanis

Cheetah Hand Puppet by Folkmanis NEW 2011

available at http://www.cowandlizard.com/product/cheetah-hand-puppet

FACTS OF INTEREST

  • Cheetah means spotted one in India.  Unfortunately, cheetahs are extinct there.  In Africa, they are seriously endangered too.
  • Cheetahs are the fastest land animals.  For short sprints, they can move at 70 mph; they can reach that speed in three seconds.
  • Female cheetahs are solitary; they stay with their cubs for almost two years.  Males live in small groups.
  • The call of both adults and cubs is a bird-like chirp.  A mother looking for a cub sometimes answers a bird’s call by mistake!

THE TRACKS OF TEARS

Once a lazy hunter watched in envy as a mother cheetah hunted a gazelle with the speed of an arrow.  He watched her drag the prey back to her two cubs waiting in the bushes.  And as he watched, he hatched a wicked plan.  As soon as the mother left to hunt the next day, he snatched both cubs from their hiding place and ran with them into the forest.  He would train them to hunt for him.  When the mother returned to find her babies gone, she began to cry. She wept all night and the next day.  She wept so long that her tears made dark staind down her cheeks.  An old hunter passing by heard her.  When he learned the reason for her grief, he gathered the village elders and together they searched for the cubs.  The cubs were returned and the greedy young man was driven from his village.  But those two dark tracks of tears remained on the cheetah’s face and whenever hunters see them, they are reminded that men must only hunt in the honorable way of the tribe.
