Green Toys Jumping Rope

It is said that ropemakers in Ancient China and Egypt would drag their ropes along the streets while working and children would jump in and out as a way to play and test their skills.  Today, jumping rope is a favorite playground and neighborhood activity.  You can skip rope by yourself, or with others.  It is good exercise and a lot of fun!

Here are some rhymes you can sing when skipping rope by yourself.
Bluebells, cockleshells
Eevy, ivy, over
Here comes the teacher with a big bad stick
Now it’s time for arithmetic
One and one are two
Two and two are four
Four and four are eight
Mother mother I am ill
Send for the doctor
Over the hill
First comes the doctor
Then comes the nurse
Then comes the lady
With the alligator purse
Out went the lady
Out went the nurse
Out went the lady
With the alligator purse

The jumper can invite another jumper in by singing the rhymes below.  When the jump is over, the original jumper jumps our and the next person in line gets invited in by the remaining jumper.

I like coffee, I like tea,

I like (name) to jump with me.

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5

You will need 3 or more and 2 long ropes to jump Double Dutch.  The people holding the ropes are turned in opposite directions as one or more jumpers jump together at the same time.

Happy Jumping!
