Salt Dough Recipe

Salt Dough is easy to mix up in your kitchen and can provide hours of fun for your kids to create their masterpieces.  From letters to beads and everything in between, your kids imaginations will surprise you.  When baked, the salt dough hardens and can be painted.  A wonderful afternoon of kids crafts!

Salt Dough Recipe

  Ingredients:

  • 10 oz plain flour
  • 10 oz salt
  • 2/3 cup room temperature water
  • 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • water based paint

  Equipment:

  • mixing bowl
  • mixing spoon
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • rolling pin
  • non-stick baking sheet
  • cookie cutters (optional)
  • paint brushes

Steps:

  1. mix the salt and water together in a mixing bowl until the salt is dissolved
  2. add flour, vegetable oil and stir until the mixture become stiff
  3. knead the mixture with your hands in the bowl until it forms a firm dough
  4. sprinkle flour on a work surface and place dough ball on it
  5. roll out the dough in even thickness
  6. cut out shapes or mold the dough into desired shapes or forms
  7. place creations on baking sheet
  8. bake at 210 F for one hour or until hard
  9. turn off oven and allow to cool inside the oven
  10. used water-based paint and a brush to paint 
  11. add other decorations as desired
